Sr Emmanuel has been transferred
On September the 13th Sr Emmanuel was transferred from Empangeni, where she has lived and worked for many years in the small community of Dominican Nuns, to Pietermaritzberg. Due to her age, she will be 86 next April, and to her frailty and the crumbling of her spine making her wheelchair bound she now needs looking after.
Her transfer to Pietermaritzburg means she will live with other elderly nuns who are now in need of care. I visited and stayed briefly with the nuns in Pitermaritzberg in the millennium and it is a most beautiful place set in stunning surroundings and a short walk from the amazimg and very tropical Botanical Gardens.
I spoke to Sister Emmanuel on the eve of her departure and she was very sad to leave the sisters of Empangeni, her little dog and her many friends. Every morning she used to sit on the bench where the children passed to go to the adjoining school. She used to be a teacher and has a great affinity and love of children and she will miss this part of her life very much and she in turn will be greatly missed.
In her lifetime she has done many great things for the African people, too many to mention here, but like with all others who have met her she has made an incredible impact on their lives.
I will phone occasionally to speak to her and all that remains now is to wish her much happiness in this new environment and hope she settles in quickly and easily.
